Muscat, Oman's capital, is a clean and modern city. Driving is easy and trouble-free, especially if you stick to the speed limit and follow all regulations. Before you take out your car rental in Muscat for a spin, take note of these map and direction basics.
Mastering Direction Basics
Muscat's city proper is not at all big, and you shouldn't have any trouble at all navigating your way through the main six-lane highway. It can get confusing however when you get to Qurum, where the road splits into two, crosses over itself, and continues in a series of what looks like distorted figure-eight shapes circumnavigating the mountains. To make it easy for you to find specific locations, think of the airport's roundabout as your starting point. After that, keep in mind of the roundabouts that follow starting with the first one, Azaiba. This is followed by:
Ghubra (also called Bowshar)
Al Khuwair
Qurum
Wuttayah
Wadi Adai
— Hamriya
Ruwi
Al Burj
Bait Al Falaj
After you master the position of the roundabouts, you shouldn't have any trouble whatsoever getting around the city.
Understanding Maps
There are three challenges to using a map of Muscat for the very first time:
1. There are many variations in the spelling of streets, thanks to the different transliterations of Arabic.
2. There are a lot of roundabouts on the map itself.
3. There are many drawings on these roundabouts.
If you find incense burners, boats, coffee pots, books, or fish on roundabouts, do not tear out your hair in frustration. It's really quite easy to decipher these symbols.
The drawings refer to the huge model sculptures that appear in the roundabouts. They tell something about the area that the roundabout appears in. For example, near the Sultan Qaboos University is a roundabout with the drawing of a large book. Locals frequently call this roundabout the "book roundabout". So when you see a book on a roundabout, take it to mean that roundabout is near a school.
Muttrach corniche roundabout is the symbol of a fish. This means the roundabout is part of a coastal road, and is close to fish souk and budget hotels.
